“I think you are wrong to want a heart. It makes most people unhappy. ”
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
The famous children’s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was first published back in 1900. Its author, L. Frank Baum, tells the story of how a young farm girl named Dorothy, and her dog Toto, are swept away from their farm home in Kansas by a tornado to a magical land named Oz. There, she meets the Good Witch of the North who tries to help her get back home. She tells Dorothy to follow a yellow brick road to the Emerald City where she will find the powerful Wizard of Oz.
Along the way she makes friends with a tin-man, a lion and a scarecrow who decide to go with her to find the wizard. Together they face adventures full of magic and danger, and discover how important friendship is. Like in all good fairy stories there is always a baddy, and this one is no exception. The Wicked Witch of the West, with her band of flying monkeys, makes the story quite scary. But, when Dorothy finally gets home, she realises it was all a dream. Or was it? The novel was an immediate success and Baum wrote 13 more books as sequels to the original Oz story.
