The most talked about romance of the moment is the love story between Anne and Gilbert. If you didn’t know, that’s Anne Shirley and her childhood sweetheart, Gilbert Blythe. Although you can currently follow their story in the Netflix series Anne with an E, the original story comes from the 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942).
Anne moves to the town of Avonlea when, as an orphan, she is adopted by an elderly brother and sister. She is extremely proud, fiery tempered and extremely intelligent. She hates her red hair, loves poetry and dreams of being a romantic heroine.
It is on her first day at Avonlea school that she meets the handsome Gilbert Blythe for the first time. He tries to attract her attention by teasing her about her red hair. Anne is furious! She hits him over the head and swears never to speak to him again. Even when he saves her from a dangerous boating accident, she continues not speaking to him. Gilbert and Anne become rivals at school, both of them wanting to get the top marks. Gilbert is popular and clever and although he tries to become friends with Anne, she remains hostile and competitive towards him for 5 years!
