“True friends are always together in spirit.”
Anne of Green Gables

Nowadays, if you want to make ‘friends’ with someone, you send them a friend request on Facebook. You might have thousands of friends on social networks but have you got a real BFF (Best Friend Forever)?

Literature is full of amazing friendships, from the famous trio Harry, Ron and Hermione to the March sisters in Little Women. One of the best loved BFF stories is Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908 by L.M. Montgomery.

When orphan, Anne Shirley is adopted and goes to live at Green Gables, she makes friends with Diana, the girl who lives next door. From that moment they are best friends… or bosom friends, as Anne says. They never fight, they are proud of each other and keep each other’s secrets. Anne says, “If we have friends we should only look for the best in them and give them the best that is in us.” She is usually a very competitive student, but when her friend gets a better mark than her at school, she’s not sad. “I don’t mind being beaten by Diana,” she says.

8th June is Best Friends Day, the perfect moment to celebrate having… and being… a BFF!
